Did you ever attend INWOOD PUBLIC SCHOOL ? Well, it's doubtful that you ever attended the two story wood frame building because it was built in 1884 and served the community until it was torn down in 1916. At first only the downstairs was divided into classrooms and the upstairs was used as a large room for public gatherings. Inwood was growing fast so soon they divided the upstairs into classrooms as well. This lasted until 1915 and the growth of the community demanded even more room for classrooms. The following year they moved into their new, brick building.

The brick building was built in 1916 and served as Inwood Public School until 1959 when it became West Lyon South and served until 1967. It was empty for a few short years and used for community activities until the cost of maintenance exceeded it's usefulness and it too was torn down.

The two other pictures were taken on Easter Sunday, 1941, following a devastating fire. Little seven year old “Giffy” Jacobsen was out for a ride on his tricycle around 9 a.m. When he saw the smoke. “Giffy” went and got his dad, who was a little apprehensive about his sons story. They both went to see if there really was a fire and by then Cliff Pruitt was also on the scene. Inwood was suffering from a water shortage at the time but luckily the city employees had just filled the water tower the night before. The Canton Fire Department was also on the scene. Both fire departments, after the fire, decided they were ill equipped for a fire in a building so tall.

There was speculation that the fire started in the Chemistry lab (the extreme rear south room of the top story) and other stories but it was later determined that the fire was started by a lightening strike during a storm the preceding night.
